Having been home to 16 historic civilisations, this ancient city is one of the prominent archeological sites in the world. These civilisations include Hittite, Persian Commagene, Roman and Byzantine. Founded at its present place in the 7th century by the Ummayyads, Adiyaman later housed several empires and states including the Anatolian Seljuks and finally the Ottomans. The famous Mount Nemrud and its famous ruins from the imperial cult of Commagene are located in the East Taurus mountain range.
Due to the city being surrounded by the Taurus mountain range and being protected on the north by the Malatya Mountains, there are two different climates in the north and the south of Adiyaman. With hot summers and cold winters in the south and cooler temperatures all year round in the north.
Located in the Central Euphrates part of the Fertile Crescent, Adiyaman enjoyed being at the centre of the crossroads on the major trade routes for thousands of years and thus hosted many civilizations. It is now your turn to follow those ancient routes.
